XI Paralympic Winter Games-2014, Sochi

March 16, Fisht Olympic Stadium hosted the closing ceremonies for the XI Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.

RIA News Agency hosted the “Olympic TV Coverage” press-conference on March 14. The event started at 4 p.m.

Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort hosted all alpine skiing events. On March 8, Paralympic alpine skiing kicked off here. The competitions ended on March 16.

Wheelchair curling first became a Paralympic sport in 2006 in Turin.8 teams competed for medals. This year in Sochi, just like at the previous Paralympics in Vancouver, there were ten teams.

Ice Sledge Hockey games began at Shayba Arena on March 8. The best national sledge hockey teams from 8 countries competed in this event (Russia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Norway, USA, Italy, Sweden, and South Korea).

Paralympic competitions started on March 8. Athletes were arriving at the Laura Ski and Biathlon Complex, where they would compete in biathlon and cross-country skiing. Biathlon was first included in the Paralympic program in Innsbruck in 1988. In 1992, visually impaired athletes began to compete in this event as well. And cross-country skiing became a Paralympic sport in 1976 in Örnsköldsvik (Sweden). Laura’s landscape makes covering cross-country skiing and biathlon challenging.

The Opening Ceremony for the Sochi Paralympic Games took place on Friday, March 7, and began at 20.14 Moscow time. Fisht Olympic Stadium, the same venue that greeted Olympic athletes a month ago, hosted the ceremony.

According to the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee press release, the XI Paralympic Games held on March 7-16 will get a total of 180-hour coverage on Russian TV channels.

For example, VGTRK, a sublicensee of the official broadcaster ANO Sports Broadcasting (Panorama), will broadcast over 50 hours of competitions on Rossiya-2 TV channel, 80 hours on Sport TV channel and 20 hours on Sport 1 TV channel.
