The 2013 University Games will take place in June and August in the city of Kazan. Some 12,000 athletes from 170 countries, up to 100,000 visitors, and over 1,500 mass media representatives are expected to take part in this event.

The competitions are to be held for a record-breaking number of sports - 26, of which 13 are major sports and 13 are minor. The athletes will complete for a total of over 300 medals. Kazan is getting ready to host and accommodate up to 100,000 sports fans and visitors, half of whom will come from abroad.
The Organising Committee is chaired by First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov.
The mascot for the Games in Kazan is Uni, a winged snow leopard cub.
Sixty-four venues will be used for the 2013 University Games in addition to the Games Village with its facilities. Thirty-six venues will be newly built, while the existing twenty-eight will be revamped and prepared for the competitions.
The Games venues will be grouped in four clusters. New and renovated highways with two-level interchanges will connect them. The metro system will serve as a major transportation network connecting venues with the University Games Village.
Kazan Airport will undergo modernization to increase its passenger turnover capacity.
Tatneft Arena stadium will be the major volleyball venue. Construction of the 45,000-seat football stadium began recently.
The track and field events will be held at the Central stadium.
A rowing canal will be created on Kaban Lake to host the rowing competitions.
Construction works are in progress for the Tennis Academy and water sports venues. A separate facility for artistic and rhythmic gymnastics will be built next to the Games Village. The Orgsintez swimming pool will host the water polo programme.
The Kazanskaya Yarmarka exhibition centre will accommodate the fencing tournament, while weightlifters will compete at the Batyr sports centre. Beach football and beach volleyball games will be held at Kazan’s new racetrack.
All the venues and facilities are to be completed by the end of 2012. Upon the completion of the Games, all the new venues will serve as sports and training facilities for Kazan’s universities and institutes, sports schools and Olympic academies. The University Games Village is planned to be converted into a college campus.
